Monitoring free serum IgE in severe asthma patients treated with omalizumab
2012
SummaryBackgroundBenefit of treatment with the monoclonal anti-IgE-antibody omalizumab in severe IgE-dependent asthma requires a significant reduction of serum free IgE concentrations. It is unclear if monitoring free serum IgE is clinically meaningful once omalizumab treatment is initiated.MethodsFree IgE and omalizumab serum concentrations were quantified in 22 patients with severe asthma (68% female, 47 ± 11 yrs, mean (±SD) pre-bronchodilator FEV1 62 ± 13%, baseline mean (±SEM) free serum IgE 652 ± 136 ng/ml) treated with omalizumab for 4 months using a Recovery-ELISA.ResultsOmalizumab treatment reduced free serum IgE prior to the second omalizumab injection by 73%, after 16 weeks by 81%…
Relationship between specific serum IGE to Ascaris lumbricoides and onset of respiratory symptoms in Bangladesh immigrants
2006
The role of helminths in asthma and/or rhinitis and in allergic sensitization is still unclear. We assessed the relationship between Ascaris-specific IgE, respiratory symptoms and allergic sensitization in Bangladesh immigrants. 246 individuals were examined from 1996 to 2001. Serum total IgE, Ascaris IgE, specific IgE to inhalant allergens, skin prick tests (SPT) and parasitological evaluation of the stool were performed. Total serum IgE were significantly higher in Ascaris-IgE positive (> 0.35 kU/L) individuals (806.5 [409.0–1436.0] kU/L vs. 207.0 [127.0–332.5] kU/L; P < 0.0001) and in subjects with respiratory symptoms (413.0 [239.0–1096.0] kU/L vs. 259.5 [147.0–387.0] kU/L), ( P …
Iperreattività bronchiale aspecifica in pazienti monosensibili con rinite allergica: variazioni stagionali in rapporto alle IgE sieriche totali ed ag…
2005
Introduction: The significance of the association between allergic rhinitis and abnormal airway responsiveness is unclear. For this reason, we have studied, in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis, non specific bronchial hyperreactivity, total serum IgE and blood eosinophils, with reference to the responsible allergen, during and out of the pollen season. Materials and methods: Fourty-nine, non-smoking patients, living in Palermo, with clinical diagnosis of allergic rhinitis, skin prick tests and specific serum IgE mono-sensitive to pollen allergens, were enrolled in the study. Twenty patients suffered from seasonal rhinitis to Parietaria pollen, 15 patients to Graminacee pollen and 14 …

Fractional exhaled nitric oxide is associated with more severe asthma
2018
Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) levels are used as a marker of airway inflammation. The aim of the present work was to evaluate a possible relationship between FeNO and parameters of asthma control and severity in different asthma phenotypes. FeNO was evaluated in 200 asthma patients (37% male, mean age ± SD 54±15 years, 19% controlled (GINA), 30% treated with oral corticosteroids (OCS), median FEV1 (interquartile range) 2,05 L (1,49-2,70), 74% pred. (56-90%)), together with other asthma characteristics (lung function, asthma control, allergies, serum IgE, serum ECP, and blood eosinophils). Patients with poorly controlled asthma had significantly higher FeNO values (ACQ-5≥1.5 vs. 70%…
Long-term efficacy of omalizumab (OMA) for patients with severe allergic asthma (SAA). Clinical assessment and relationship to serum IgE concentratio…
2015
Background: OMA is an effective treatment option in SAA. However, little data are available on the long-term-efficacy oft the drug. Objective: To determine the long-term efficacy of OMA in respect to clinical parameters and IgE serum levels. Methods: This was a retrospective, open-label, uncontrolled, multi-center observational study according to the definition of non-interventional studies. 22 non-smoking patients (10 m, 12 f; mean age 47,9 yrs) with SAA were enrolled. Pat were treated with OMA up to for 4 years and total serum IgE levels were assessed at initiation of therapy, after 2-6 ms and 3-5 yrs. Data were recorded on standardized CRFs by the treating physician. Results: The average…
